No medals at BUCS Duathlon but lots of good performances, and fun!

Updated: Aug 20, 2019

The first big race of the year was BUCS Duathlon. Last year we came away with a team Bronze medal for the women's Blues and an individual gold medal for Sophia Saller. Whilst we didn't come away with any medals this year (having unfortunately lost our international athlete Sophia now she's finished her DPhil), there were many promising results from experienced and new athletes alike.

In the women's race, Katie Truslove and Lizzie Sandham battled it out to become the highest placed Oxford athlete. Katie came into the run first but was overtaken by Lizzie as Lizzie put in a strong bike leg. However, Katie pulled it back and overtook Lizzie in the last km of the run to come out on top. Lizzie put in a great performance too, especially given it was her first race back after being hit by a car before the the last Varsity Match! Kinga Zielinska, new to Oxford this year, had a great debut race, finishing just a minute behind.

On the men's side, Joe Bowness and Luke Grenfell-Shaw placed within a minute of each other in the top 50 in an extremely competitive field. Andre Noe and John Gardner were the next athletes for Oxford. The solid men's field gives us strong hope for Varsity Duathlon victory!

Overall, it was a great race to kick off the season!
